If your brick looks dull and dry you might look into this. The product to use is H&C concrete stain by Sherwin Williams. It may not work on all brick, depending on the kind of brick you have and how it’s laid, but for us it was a small miracle. We didn’t try to color the mortar too, so we had to pick out a color that would coordinate with our mortar. We had plain red brick so we just went back with red.
- 9” paint roller and handle
- 1/4” nap roller cover
- small paint brush (not nylon)
- 1 quart of xylene
- roller pan
- paint pot
- One word of warning,if you really don’t want to smell strong fumes you might buy a good mask. We were outside on a warm day and I think we stayed drunk on fumes for about 2 hours afterward.
If you really wanted to be sure your old brick is clean you could rent a pressure washer and wash it all, but I really don’t think that is necessary. Take a broom and brush off all the cob webs and dirt dobber nest. Be sure that there is no dirt or grass around the bottom that would interfere. That’s just about it!
How To Apply
It’s really very simple. If you have ever painted before you know that you brush up to the trim and along the bottom and roll the rest. We used the short nap roller cover so that the stain wouldn’t reach the mortar joints in between the bricks. The product calls for two coats 12 hours apart but we only had to use one. It looked like we had had our house re-bricked. It looked brand new. I guess if you were changing colors drastically it might take more than one coat.
This product is made with silicon acrylic and can be cleaned with xylene which can be bought at Sherwin Williams or just about any hardware store.
